Design, Planning and Development of Accessible Public Spaces for ALL Children
Background:
There are many benefits for children participate in play. Through play, children learn about the world, themselves, other people, society and their environment. However, there are still many children and adults who have disabilities are unable to use public play spaces for a variety of reasons. Inclusive playground is a unique children’s play environment that is designed and built to cater for all ages and abilities. There is a progressive trend for different state government to commit providing participation opportunities for people with a disability and continue supporting the development of leisure and recreational spaces which are inclusive of and accessible to people of different abilities. In recent years, the Hong Kong Government promotes the inclusive social environment and initiates a program with the aim at providing more barrier free play facilities in the public parks for all children. Hence the importance of this symposium, which will give policy makers, play space providers, related design professionals and practitioners to share the knowledge and experience in designing, planning and development of the public spaces that are accessible to ALL to play.
Aims:
Further to Playgrounds for ALL seminar in 2009 and Play for ALL play day in 2010 and 2011, this programme aims at promoting the concept and values of ‘PLAY FOR ALL’ from accessible play space design to inclusive play opportunity
• through symposium and playground visits, to introduce the Play for ALL design guidelines and best practices of creating accessible public spaces, play facilities and inclusive play opportunities for children with disabilities in the community parks and special schools
